Situation

A file-level backup plan finishes with the following message: Files and folders were skipped: {number of fiels skipped} (Code: 1603)

Cause

This is an informational message that specifies how many files were skipped due to the plan’s exclusion settings. System, hidden and on-demand files are excluded by default:

Additionally, some files might not be backed up if “always keep the last version” is disabled in the retention settings and “delete versions older than: X” is enabled. A warning message will be displayed in that case:

What Are System/Hidden Files in Windows?

In Windows, system and hidden files are special types of files that the operating system marks to protect them from accidental modification or deletion. They are often essential to system operations or belong to internal configurations of software.

These files and folders are marked with attributes:

  • Hidden (H): Not normally visible in File Explorer.

  • System (S): Identified by the OS as crucial files for functioning.

These files are usually not required for the customer and are excluded from typical operations like user-level backups to avoid unnecessary data and reduce risks of damaging core or app-related configurations
