Situation

A VM backup plan terminates with the following error: VSS Error. Cannot create the snapshot. Event ID: 8229

In the Event Logs, you also will find the following eventID: 8229.

Cause

This EventID and error means that it is not possible to create a snapshot for a specific virtual machine.

Solution

To fix this issue, proceed as follows:

  1. Open Hyper-V Manager.

2. Open Hyper-V host and select virtual machine that produced this error.

3. Right-click VM, then select Settings -> Management -> Integration services. 4. Disable Backup (volume checkpoint) Service.

5. Click OK.

The machine will be in a 'saved' state for a short period of time when you are not using 'Backup (volume checkpoint)' option and the uptime counter could be reset.

To run the backup plan with this option enabled, check the Eventlog on the Hyper-V host. It will contain warnings/errors related to the particular machine causing the issue.
